My field, no theory.

My field, no theory.

"...It is a commonplace belief that we see with our eyes. Undoubtedly, eyes are indispensable for seeing; yet we notice that many people, sometimes the majority, who have excellent eyesight nonetheless see little, in the sense that they do not see what they are looking at. Misled by prejudices or commonplaces, or simply not taught to see, they fail to grasp the formal essence and the resulting meaning of what they see. But then we do not see with our eyes alone, or rather, eyes alone are not enough to see. One might say that the eye-brain pairing is fundamental to seeing, yet even this is not entirely true. There are people who have good eyesight and keen intelligence, yet they do not see forms, do not understand their origins, much less the world of meanings they convey. What allows us to see deeply into forms is – visual perception-. Perception is the awareness we gain of the external world through observation and knowledge of the objects and things that make up the environment and have stimulated our senses of sight, hearing and touch, as well as smell and taste. But above all, seeing the surrounding world and the objects that make it up means developing a critical awareness of the reasons behind the forms we see, asking why things are as they are, why certain things are made this way and not that way, why certain events happen in that way and not another, and assessing whether that way is indeed the right one, and, if it is not the right one, what the right one would be… …Looking is a natural gift we all possess. Animals look too, but they do not always see deeply unless helped by instinct. Seeing, on the other hand, involves education, training, a truly long apprenticeship akin to that undertaken by a piano student at a music conservatory, who practices solfège and musical scales at length…” Attilio Marcolli - "Field Theory"

The meaning of the Ocean.

The meaning of the Ocean.

by Sylvie Renault | 28 Nov 2010 | Drawing, Me

The Ocean comes and goes, nourishes and destroys the beach, evaporates and then, after a very long journey, returns to where it came from. The Ocean. The Ocean has its own meaning, and even if it does not know it, it follows it. Because the Ocean knows that the Ocean is there waiting for it. Perhaps if it did not have that certainty, it too would one day choose to evaporate away forever.
